What Is A Special Beach (Coastal)
Cleanup?
This beach cleanup is special because it
is (1) Requested by the US Coast Guard, (2) We currently
do not know the date or time of the actual cleanup (3) We
must be prepared to provide volunteers to cover the entire
Pinellas shoreline with only a 36-48 hour notification (4)
We must remove all litter and debris from the shoreline and
we must do it quickly and safely.
Why Are We Planning This?
The Pinellas County shoreline is not in any immediate danger
from oil residue from the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill at
this time BUT currents, winds and storms can change the oil
spill residue direction at any time and on short notice.
The USCG and other
governmental agencies are monitoring the Gulf of Mexico,
tracking the various locations and direction of the oil
spill residue. The USCG has requested that
Keep Pinellas Beautiful establish an operational plan for volunteers
to remove litter and debris from our shoreline in the event
that oil residue is within 72 hours of reaching our shoreline. They
have requested a clean, litter-free shoreline 24 hours prior
to the expected arrival of the oil residue on our shoreline.
